A $196,000 contract for the Republic of Congo's Zero Deforestation Agriculture Study is awarded by UNOPS.

Brazzaville, Republic of Congo - 5 August 2025

A contract worth USD 196,189 has been awarded by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to carry out an extensive study on agriculture in the Republic of Congo with zero deforestation. The award, which was given out in accordance with RFP/2025/56535, is a significant step in the direction of promoting sustainable farming methods and halting regional deforestation.

Encouraging Forest Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture

UNOPS' overarching goal of promoting environmental sustainability and climate resilience in Central Africa is furthered by this recently awarded contract. The chosen service provider will spearhead a comprehensive investigation into zero deforestation agriculture with the goal of identifying tactics that support agricultural output while preserving the nation's essential forest ecosystems.

The Republic of Congo, which is home to a portion of the Congo Basin rainforest, is essential to the preservation of biodiversity and the control of global carbon emissions. However, the preservation of forests has long been threatened by agricultural growth. It is anticipated that this study will offer data-driven policy recommendations to help the government and development partners strike a balance between forest protection and food security.

The dedication of UNOPS to sustainable development

When it comes to executing climate-smart, sustainable infrastructure and development projects, governments and organisations continue to rely on the United Nations Office for Project Services. UNOPS assists nations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), and in making the transition to low-carbon economies through programmes such as these.

The study will "inform future programming and investment in sustainable land use systems, ensuring agriculture becomes a driver of conservation rather than deforestation," said Serge Kambere Sivamuenda, UNOPS focal point for this project.

Next Actions

The study's findings are anticipated to have an impact on national agricultural policies, encourage prudent land management, and strengthen ties between local farming communities, government agencies, and research organisations. When finished, the results might be used as a regional template for Central African efforts to achieve zero deforestation.
